Crowds Throng Blooded Horse Winter Sale
by Dot Morgan
In spite of the uncertainty lurking in most harness racing states,
the Winter Blooded Horse Sale was packed with owners, breeders,
and trainers seeking the elusive “franchise player”
to carry their stable, pay off their mortgage, or simply keep them
afloat. Inspiration reigned with the crowd eagerly scrutinizing
pedigrees and performance lines while enjoying the camaraderie of
friends. The sale provided a brief respite from winter chores and
a chance to exchange and replenish stock.
The sale topper was New And Notable, a son of Self-Possessed out
of the
Champion mare, Winky’s Goal 3,1:54.4 ($844,924). This super
individual with a star-studded pedigree was purchased for $32,000
to stand at Victory Hill Farm in Indiana. Berley, a handsome gray
gelding with six wins in his last eight starts at Delaware tracks,
brought $23,000 from Paradise, Inc. to race in Chicago.
Interest was high on Rita Polese’s consignment of 27 racehorses,
most of which were ready to drop in the box. Black Gabe, a statuesque
black conditioned pacer, was purchased from her group for $16,500
by Chuck Reinier of Ohio. The four year old Indiana stakes winning
filly, Delphi’s Dolly, consigned by Brooke Nickells will race
in New York on a $15,000 bid from Sandy Beaulier.
Homer Hochstetler brought a nice group of fresh racehorses from
Chicago. His consignment was led by the competitive green four year
old pacer, Parklane Enforcer, at $14,700. John Lare signed the ticket
for the attractive bay Jate Lobell gelding that will now race in
Delaware.
The always popular Armstrong Brothers’ consignment was led
by the young Pine Chip daughter, Armbro Takeapeek. In foal to Angus
Hall, the half sister to Parklane Kathy 3,1:56.4 ($553,521) was
purchased for $17,000 by Michael Oke of Nicholasville, KY. Robert
Harmon was very pleased to win the bidding war on the exceptionally
pretty and fast Down Time p,2,1:54.4 ($152,022) for $13,000. The
producing daughter of Laag was in foal to Matt’s Scooter.
Another mare sporting a fast two year old record, Armbro Ring p,2,1:57
was purchased in foal to Blissful Hall for $12,000.
Classy claimers are always in demand at the Blooded Horse Sale.
A few of the more noteworthy were Hot-Rod Sahbra racing in a $4,000
claimer at Northfield, purchased for $10,000 to race in Maine; Athena
Seelster racing in $4500 company at Windsor went to Michigan for
$6,000; Rocking Medley N competing for a $4000 tag in Chicago moved
to Ohio for $5300.
